emda’s Achievements
- From 2002 to 2007 emda has created or safeguarded 33,382 jobs, helped set up or attract 6,327 new businesses, reclaimed or developed 719 hectares of brownfield land and assisted 63,938 people to develop their skills within the region.
- From 2005 to 2007, emda has also helped 13,109 people to get a job and helped 28,891 businesses to improve their performance.
- Unemployment in the East Midlands is below the UK average with nearly full employment.
- Levered inward investment moving RDA from 11th to 6th in the UK in 2006.
- BioCity has provided incubation facilities for medium sized enterprises in the bio-pharmaceutical and life science sector – 48 bio-pharmacy and life science companies (13 spinning out of universities).
- ‘blueprint partnership’ – a public private partnership to deliver regeneration will invest £139m in its portfolio of projects, which will level in over £100m of private sector funding over the next 7 years.
- Since 1999, 26 projects have been managed within the National Coalfield’s Programme, successfully transforming some of the region’s most deprived communities.
- High Growth Company Support scheme offers businesses intensive coaching to improve productivity and performance. Turnover in participating firms has increased 13% leading to the creation of 225 new jobs.
- The New Business New Life campaign reached over 20,000 people last year.
- Silverstone Innovation Centre opened in 2006 providing 16 incubator units for new companies and 27 suites for growing companies.
- Lachesis Fund set up in 2002 has doubled to £7.9m bridging the funding gap for new technologies from universities.
- Leadership in developing social enterprises, such as supporting development of the Genesis Centre, at the cutting edge of community entrepreneurship.
- emda established a recovery fund in response to recent floods which helped 117 businesses stay viable during the crisis.
