ONE’s Achievements
- From 2002-2007, One NorthEast created or safeguarded 68,433 jobs, helped set up or attract 9,795 new businesses, reclaimed or developed 584 hectares of brownfield land and assisted 267,745 people to develop their skills within the region.
- From 2005-2007, ONE also helped 15,805 people to get a job and helped 32,103 businesses to improve their performance.
- North East England has contributed to a record year for UK investment successes, winning 64 projects expected to create close to 2,000 new jobs. Government statistics show 64 companies moved to the North East or re-invested in existing businesses in the region in 2006/07.
- The region had 1,200 more businesses at the beginning of 2007 than in 2006 – an increase of 2.4%.
- 2007 was the fifth year in a row in which growth in the number of VAT registered businesses in the region has exceeded the national average.
- One NorthEast has overseen a new £30m five year contract to establish Business Link North East, a new, single, simplified support service for firms across whole region.
- The North East Productivity Alliance (NEPA) was established by One NorthEast to drive productivity savings amongst manufacturers. The scheme has saved dozens of companies £19m by placing a team of highly skilled engineers into businesses, introducing the latest lean manufacturing techniques to raise productivity and competitiveness.
- North East England is the first region to have all telephone exchanges enabled to provide broadband to every village, town and city in the region.
- The number of jobs in the region increased from 1.054m in 1996 to 1.116m in 2005.
- Claimant numbers fell by 33% in the four years to January 2005, compared to the 19% fall nationally.
- These statistics contributed to the region’s GVA growing by 5.1% in 2004. This figure was only exceeded in England by East Midlands, whilst the UK average grew by just 4.6%.
- The ‘Passionate People, Passionate Places’ Regional Image Campaign was named the world’s leading regional marketing campaign for two successive years. North East England has been named as one of the top 30 must-see destinations for the coming year in the new edition of the Lonely Planet Bluelist 2008.
- A partnership of One NorthEast, Newcastle City Council and Newcastle University, ‘Newcastle Science City’ is located at the former Scottish and Newcastle Brewery site. The scheme has the potential to create 5,000 new jobs at a new world class location for knowledge-led businesses building on the region’s existing scientific strengths.
- One NorthEast will continue to invest in three areas of existing world class business strength – New and Renewable Energy, Process Industries and Life Sciences. By exploiting these sectors, it is estimated that each one can contribute an extra £2bn to the North East economy.
- In their Independent Performance Assessment, ONE was judged to be performing strongly. The report stated, ‘One NorthEast has a strong vision and works well with partners from across the region. There is strong leadership from both the chairman and chief executive’.
