NWDA’s Achievements

Since its inception, the NWDA has created or safeguarded over 180,000 jobs, helped to set up or attract over 15,000 businesses and reclaimed 4,000 hectares of brownfield land.
The Agency has also helped the region lever £3 billion of private sector investment.
Economic activity rates in the Northwest have increased between 1998 and 2005 at a faster rate than any other English region. The gap with the England average has reduced to just 1.7%, the differential having halved during the last 7 years.
Since 2002, the Agency has been directly involved in attracting over 200 foreign and direct inward investments into the region, which have created or safeguarded over 27,000 jobs. The Northwest was the top performing UK region in attracting jobs through inward investment between 2002 and 2007.
Through the Manufacturing Advisory Service, economic performance in the sector has increased year on year. Between 2002—2005, the MAS helped clients companies achieve £32m of added vale, which is equivalent to a 9% increase in turnover.
Through Bionow, the Agency led biotechnology cluster programme, a £30m National Biomanufacturing centre has been developed to spur success in this priority sector. The region is now recognised as the second largest biotechnology cluster in the UK.
Major regeneration in Manchester and Liverpool city centres. Agency funding to ‘New East Manchester’ has helped lever in £1.2bn of private sector investment and created or safeguarded over 3,000 jobs.
After NWDA’s investment of £50m, the Daresbury International Science and Technology Park now has over 50 businesses. Internationally renowned Cockcroft Institute is acknowledged as one of the two major research centres in the UK by the government.
In response to FMD crises, NWDA’s strategic leadership helped to create or safeguard 4,400 jobs, establish 750 businesses, assist a further 7,000 businesses and lever over £10m of private investment.
