SWRDA’s Achievements
- From 2002-2007, the South West RDA has created or safeguarded 30,442 jobs, helped set up or attract 1,437 new businesses, reclaimed or developed 624.30 hectares of brownfield land and assisted 69,811 people to develop their skills within the region.
- From 2005-2007, the Agency has also helped 3,858 people to get a job and helped 24,664 businesses to improve their performance.
- High levels of private sector funding has been achieved for many projects including Harbourside Bristol (£54m); Plymouth International Business Park (£15m) and Gloucester Docks (£10m);
- Backed a variety of innovative projects to transform the region such as the Eden Project and Wave Hub.
- Beacon South West initiative spearheaded regional economic growth with firms encouraged to guide smaller companies safely through start-up and expansion.
- Rural Enterprise Gateway has provided national business support, training, information and market data helping rural businesses to prosper.
- Actnow, the UK’s first public/private broadband partnership, has created gross additional sales of some £209m in the SME community, translating into a net additional GDP of £48m within Cornwall alone.
- The Market and Coastal Towns Initiative established in 2000 has attracted 64 towns.
- Encouraged young people into higher education by investing over £12m in Combined Universities in Cornwall and helped attract European Objective One funding. By the end of 2004 the initiative had attracted £65m.
- The Gloucester heritage Urban Regeneration Company set up in 2004 has committed £106m to regeneration projects with £86.8m leveraged from the private sector.
- Strategic investment of £30m in land acquisition to underpin the S-Park Bristol and Bath Science Park and £2m site preparation for the Bournemouth Hotel School.
